THE WORST OF ME

——

Your words lack permanence

I know you love to be free,

Each time you say, “I’ll be back”

Know that my faith is the worst of me

Cast your seven-letter spell,

With such lonely admission,

“I’m sorry”, but you never

Loved me without condition

You spit your loyalty

Like hair splits its ends

Turn your cheek for every motion

That puts a lip to your hand

With my heart filled with doom,

At last I seized the chance,

Cut the music in the ballroom

To this six-year song-and-dance

Hands fell and hips swayed

To the last of the tune

Carried all of your silence

As I was exiting the room

I left our empire in exile

Passed the thorn-laden garden

Like it, I used to bloom for you,

But now I’m a warrior hardened

All our old friends tell me

That you released the chandelier

Burned down the whole castle

While grinning ear to ear

Let a joker snatch my throne,

Tore silk off every surface,

In your closet now my bones,

Once a kingdom now a circus

At times the road less travelled

Is the one best split to two,

My hands will remain steady

As I thrum with something new,

Yes, with the liar’s nest unravelled,

The worst part of me is no longer you
