THE ONE THING WOUNDS DO

——

Staring over a cliff

And stood at the foot of a giant

Dare me to raise my voice,

Dare you to teach me compliance

So you raise your calloused hand

Like you raise your wretched stakes

When it comes to gaining control

I know you’ll do whatever it takes

You don your sharpest blade

So you can strike me down first

Because the one thing wounds do

Is know how to hurt

When it comes to your rules

I break them at your bend,

Reap my adolescent woes

Who've become my oldest friends

I smile facing your monsters,

Tell myself they’re not here,

But I’m staring into the abyss

Denying the blood-chilling fear

You’ll lose more than your temper

When I finally turn to leave

Tear up the curtained windows,

The veneer of fiction that you weaved

But there will be no venom

In backward glances that I steal

Because the one thing wounds do

Is surely learn to heal.
