ELEGY
——
Gone are the flowers your winter buried
Your mind was blue, my vision blurry
Its final breath fogged the looking glass
Darling we’re dead, so what’s the hurry?
Did your love hail from a place of faith?
Mine was a blossom rooted in blunder
Your wind tried to carry my leaden weights
As my every little storm swept us under
I was sure you’d only tolerate me,
I couldn’t seem to shake the feeling
I wondered how people fall in love
After they’ve fallen to disbelieving
You know I think it’s something strange
You don’t rescind love you give away
Shattered my world with every change
By keeping each promise you ever made
I made a show of the shine in my scars
The proof of every crestfallen defeat
Isn’t a heart beautiful when left ajar?
Vacant, inviting, and knows that you’ll leave
And what of you, how you set me aflame?
With the beating heart of your light displays
Volatile sparks on the concrete lanes
I felt them every time you said my name

I’d seen it coming and knew I’d go
Prepared an elegy both sweet and bitter,
But when I said I’d take a bullet for you
I never imagined you behind the trigger
You hit my heart racing and left that day
As I longed for my previous naïveté
Before the world had become so heavy,
‘Cause nothing about me made you stay.
